Wood waste is now classified as genearl refuse and attracts a $97 per tonne charge. This significantly raises the cost of disposal for commercial operators, and still leaves the problem of wood leachates eventually contaminating the ground water.
Allgrind takes wood, mainly construction and demolition (C&D) waste, and feeds it through the Christchurch designed-and-built Ripper machine to create boiler fuel in the form of wood chips that are easily transportable and an ideal alternative energy source.
"The recent changes to landfill regulations in Christchuch are an example of the greater emphasis local authorities are placing on recycling globally. Landfills are closing around the worls and the demand for cost-effective and reliable processing of waste material is growing fast.
Allgrind's business has doubled in size in the last six months. The new Council by-law, introduce in April, is already making an impact on their business. The economic cost of landfill dumping has caused commercail operators to re-think how they dispose of wood waste. Allgrind provides and economical and environmentally-frienly solution.
